Temperatures have soared into the 70's in Denver for the last few weeks, and all sorts of blossoms have been unfurling before our eyes.
As usual I was chomping at the bit to start my seedlings. With about 9 weeks until the average last frost, I started tomato, basil and pepper seeds on March 11th. The peppers did not sprout but the tomatoes and basil seedlings did very well. It was warm enough to put them outside daily for the last 2 weeks, so they are already hardened off. This week temperatures gave gone back to much cooler and more normal temperatures.
The rhubarb is monstrous, and although Fin wouldn't dare eat any rhubarb crumble, he was certainly will to wield a knife to help prep for it. I used Martha's recipe for crumble. Delicious!

Last week I got a call from a friend that they had cut down an old tree in her neighbors yard. I had seen this tree many times before, brought to my attention because of the active bee hive thriving in this majestic, gnarled old tree. It stood steadfast on the edge of the neighbor's property, it's heavy old limbs draped over my friends driveway. The fear was that the tree would give way and crush my friend's car or worse, the house.
My friend said the tree had been cut down and I had to come to see all the bees and the ions of honey comb. That it was amazing, I am sure she has no idea the maelstrom of emotions this set off. Coming on the heels of bad new about my father's health and too little sleep after a late night shift I could not hold back the tears. I hung up the phone and sobbed. I cried for those beautiful bees, whose lives had been turned on end with a simple cut of the saw. How honeybees have been assaulted from every angle, from pesticides, to genetically modified plants, to habitat loss. And while I was at it, I cried for that beautiful old tree, and for the squirrels and birds who had made it their home.
This was something I could never appreciate.
Since it was almost December, it seemed their fate was sealed. The neighbors had tried to get a professional to come and see if they could save the hive, but it seemed that was not going to pan out. Although the temperatures had been unseasonably warm, there was no nectar flow or pollen to be had. If the comb was damaged, as it sounded like it certainly was, there was not much to be done. I tried in vain not to think about the bees and I steered clear of that block when driving or walking my dogs.
Two days later, my friend called again to say the bees were flying and she was wondering of there was anything we could do to help them. I stopped my pity party and went into action. I called several people who are known in the Denver area to rescue bees. As much as I hated to do it, I had to go take a look to see what we were dealing with before we could help.
This piece of log was by the street, the bees were very active and agitated and many passerbys were agitated too. Since the all the pieces of the hive were not together the hive was split and one section must have been without a queen. The comb was damaged but still intact in many areas.
And not a minute too soon. The garden is winding down, the pumpkins and squash have been plucked out from under the nose of daredevil squirrels who brave our backyard despite out very own guard animals.

The only tomatoes left on the vine are mealy or still green, Today I cleared out a raised bed and put on a cover crop of clover down, something I plan on doing every year but never seem to get around to.
The bees have decreased there number to prepare for winter, I am concerned about the amount of wasps I have flying around the ground in front of the hive and even occasionally entering. They bees seem strong, but I can't imagine why they would allow a wasp in. I am VERY reluctant to kill them, I really believe there is a delicate balance that we should not disturb, and the wasps have been so good in the garden keeping out your everyday garden villains like slugs and squash borers.
I have posted on some bee forums to see if I can get any feedback, I also snooped around the neighborhood to a home near by that has 3 langstroth hives. I noted many wasps patrolling the grounds around their hives too.
On the knitting front, I am still spinning my beautiful fiber, slow and steady.
I have also finished a shrug

But the big news is I have started a new cardigan.
Anastasia by Cecily MacDonald. I downloaded the pattern from Raverly today and have been knitting furiously since,
It is the most difficult but by far the most fun thing I have ever knitted. I love the Madeline Tosh yarn.
For instance, I have a lovely neighbor who eats organic foods and buys organic cotton clothing, and wouldn't dream of using an Roundup, but pours toxic fertilizers on her lawn on a regular basis.
This morning I saw here dousing her front yard with a spray can full of the stuff
"Oh it's just Miracle Grow" she smiled innocently at me. "I put the dogs in the house for a few days." Really? Is that what we want to put on our yards? For a green lawn no less?

Here are some facts about Scotts Miracle Grow (not to mention the 12 million dollar law suit they have just been slapped with for selling poisonous bird feed)
http://www.rodale.com/scotts-bird-food-lawsuit

Miracle-Gro is a synthetic fertilizer that contains ammonium phosphate and several other chemicals that can be toxic to your soil and plants. It is prohibited from use in certified-organic farming.
Long-term studies at the University of Wisconsin have shown that
acidic chemical
fertilizers are causing serious, permanent damage to our soils. Usually
these fertilizers are also highly soluble, so they leach away and
pollute our water systems, too!

This isn't just specific to Scott's products, all non organic fertilizers reek havoc on our soil.

• Chemical fertilizers do not contain any trace
minerals/micro nutrients. After a few years the soil has been depleted
from those elements. Overtime those elements are not contained in the
fruits or in the vegetables anymore diminishing their quality.
• Chemical fertilizers are used together with chemical pesticides,
herbicides and fungicides. Use of chemicals have a negative impact on
the soil, the water as well as the crop as the vegetables, for instance,
still contain chemical traces which are then absorbed upon eating
• Chemical fertilizers kill microorganisms which in turn will make the soil useless where nothing can grow
• Chemical fertilizers and pesticides are responsible for water
contamination. For excessive enrichment of ponds, rivers and lakes is
due to an overuse of chemical fertilizers (see eutrophy)
• Usage of chemical fertilizers have a long term effect on the plants, the soil, the environment and you.

The advantages of organic fertilizers are so numerous I won't get into boring details and they are available everywhere, but one of the best ways to keep your soil fertile is to encourage earthworms!
But that's for a whole other post...
This weekend was the Denver Botanic Gardens' Urban Homesteading Tour and I was lucky enough to be part of it. Denver has amazed me with it's homegrown, eat local, and urban homesteading movement, and Saturday as the groups of people filed through our small city garden, I got to meet and talk with them firsthand. I met so many people who were planning on or who already embarked on the age old practice of growing their own food or raising chickens or keeping bees. I met people who various reasons could not start their own gardens but wanted to be apart of this incredible movement all the same.
People from all walks of life who see a need for a change
in our current food production system and are taking steps to make that
change happen one seed at a time.

Truthfully I didn't take any pictures Saturday since I was so busy showing people around. I was also coming off a night shift and had only slept a few hours so I was dazed. One of the sponsors of the tour, The Lazy Homesteader, came and did take some pictures.
She has a great blog at lazyhomesteader.com
In the morning before people arrived, I made a meager attempt to cut back fallen sunflowers, pick dead leaves and clean out any fresh poop from the chicken coop. Then I put out a basket of eggs, jams and applesauce I had canned this year for viewing, and honey and beeswax lotions for sampling. I have to say, the honey went over well.
I have been knitting madly on my Audrey in Undst sweater, I just finished the sleeves which are made by picking up stitches around the arm and then adding short rows. Now I am putting on the button bands. I love this construction, but sadly made it too small. I never get gauge and then I try and adjust the pattern. I don't think it worked in this case, but I still love the sweater and plan on squeezing into it if it kills me! I plan on making it in brown too.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13876466644478319638noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3385382321526729100.post-79646536716303611322012-09-11T09:24:00.003-07:002012-09-11T22:12:46.638-07:00Spinning out of control

After months of focusing on planting and growing, harvesting and then preparing food from the garden, I am ready to be done. With the shorter hours of daylight and slightly cooler night temperatures, the vegetables are beginning to die back. I am harvesting the last of the tomatoes, peppers and zucchinis and the pumpkins are all round, ripe and ready for picking. It's time to turn my attention to my other obsession.
Knitting! And now spinning....

I recently took a class at the Fancy Tiger in Denver, a drop spindle class. I knew I would be smitten and I am. The feel and smell of that sheepy fiber, the way it slips through your fingers, magically transforming into one of my favorite things, yarn!
The drop spindle is so beautiful and basic. Just a smooth piece of wood

I love the fact that is has been used for centuries, that it has a long history and that is so streamlined. I also love how rustic the spun yarn looks. Right now I guess I don't want the yarn to look perfect, like machine-spun yarn. I am sure that that would have it's benefits too, but I like the look of unevenly spun yarn for some projects, And the price was right.
Two ounces of fiber and the lovely Ashford drop spindle were included in the class for just $35.00! It was well worth the money, and Jamie was a wonderful teacher.
After class I purchases 2 more ounces of this:
Happily, this year we will participate in The Denver Botanic Gardens Homesteading Tour.

Last year we were on the Denver Botanic Gardens tour
of the chicken coops and we loved loved it. It was wonderful sharing ideas with like-minded folks. We met many people who already had gardens, some had chickens or goats, and some who were interested in starting the process and wanted to get some ideas. Since this whole homesteading movement is so dear to my heart, and I love spreading the word about how gratifying it can be, this is the perfect venue!
Homesteading is so much more than
just having a garden. To me, it's about trying to become more sustainable and more self-sufficient, and about connecting to our seasons, to our land and to our ancestors.
Its about growing food, and then preparing or canning, drying or storing that food. Its about composting, or seed saving, raising animals for food or fiber. It's about handmade.
There is still time to apply if you want to share your way of homesteading.
My mother-in-law, who lives just a few blocks away has one of the most majestic apple trees in the neighborhood. It must be over 20 years old, and my mother-in-law admits it was the reason she bought the house. It's the perfect climbing tree for the kids and even sports a tree swing. What's not to love about it?
I will tell you what's not to love. The hundreds of apples that fall from the tree daily and immediately begin to rot and turn to mush. The man from the city who gives you a warning that if you don't clean up the apples you will get fined.
So we have spent many a day helping our Granny out, picking up rotting apples, only to have them replaced with new fallen apples next day. The upside is that we have gotten to pick lots of fresh apples too. Not a bad deal.
Martha Stewart's pie crust Pate Brisee with Bobby Flay's Apple Pie recipe. Although it was much easier, I don't I don't like this recipe as much as the recipe that sautes the apples in a little butter first.and reduces the juices.
Cook's Illustrated has a great crumble recipe. Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13876466644478319638noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3385382321526729100.post-18330441004066084772012-08-16T20:18:00.002-07:002012-08-16T20:40:13.454-07:00Everything is peachy

This peach tree which was planted in the chicken yard 3 years ago, has grown so fast that the branches are bowed over and almost lay on the ground. Early on in the season I tried removing the fruit so that they were all a hand's breadth apart. This should allow for bigger, healthier fruit. Looking at it now that the fruit is larger, I see that I wasn't very diligent. There are many areas of clumps of fruit. I also failed to prune the tree, resulting in too much growth. I read recently that if the branches are bowed too much it releases a hormone that prevents the tree from fruiting next year. I was so excited at how much it had grown, I didn't want to prune it. Ahh well, live and learn.

In order to grow anything in the chicken yard I wrap chicken wire in large circle around the base to prevent the girls from scratching and killing the roots. I have great luck growing anise hyssop, which smell wonderful and the hens don't like to eat. As long as the base is protected it grows great. It is very drought tolerant as well.
(The first photo is not from my garden, it's just a great shot of hyssop)
Here you can see that these peaches are not a hand's breadth apart. It is hard to tell from the photos but many of the peaches are tiny.

There are still many big fat juicy ones though, just in time to start making peach pies! I use Martha Stewart's wonderful Pate Brisee pie crust recipe and Cooks Illustrated's filling.
First you blanch the peaches for easy peeling. (This works amazing well.) Then pit and slice them, and toss them with lemon juice sugar and a pinch of salt. I used less than half the sugar and it still tasted a little on the sweet side.
Cooks Illustrated has tested out several ways to create the perfect filling, juicy but not too runny. It tested flour, tapioca corn starch and potato starch added to the peaches for thickening. They concluded that potato starch is by far the best with crushed tapioca second. I didn't have any potato starch on hand and although it is not the same thing, I used potato flour.
That's right, the long awaited San Maranzano's are ready. (and a brandywine or two). I spent the morning in the garden picking tomatoes and trying to manage the tangle of plants. I cut out tons of the dreaded borage, tied up some slumping sunflowers, and now can see what is in my raised beds.
This year we are slow roasting them (200 degrees for 12-12 hours) with a bit of olive oil, dried basil salt and garlic. Then they can be used for recipes or frozen for up to 6 months. They fill the house with the most intoxicating aroma. I also roasted mushrooms, eggplant and zucchini to toss over warm pasta for dinner tonight. Unfortunately I got called into work tonight and won't be able to enjoy this with my family tonight, but I hope to enjoy these throughout the winter.

I am obviously a more-is-better kind of gardener. I can not seem to pull out anything that is green and alive including some weeds. I love jungle feeling I get from a closely packed garden.
A few weeks ago friends visited us from Tucson. Dry, desert-y Tucson. When the family headed out to our back yard my friend turned to me and said concernedly "Diane, this looks like a crazy old woman's garden!"
Not "Wow, what talented gardener created this lush garden?" Not "Wow, what an abundance of fresh food you must have."
Just a crazy old woman's garden. Crazy? Old??
Of course I went through the various stages of grief. Denial, anger, depression and then finally acceptance. Yes, perhaps my borage is a little bit out of control, and yes sunflowers and holly locks are coming up in the middle of the few walking paths are still passable, but they are flowers after all.
Today when I made a scrambled egg on bread with thick slices of Brandywine tomato, mayo with fresh chives, I didn't care one smidgen about being a crazy old gardener.
Unfortunately real life and work keep taking precedent, so it's been about three weeks since I have gotten around to this blog. Even now I can hear the kids screaming and feel a little guilty for taking this time to download pictures and write frivolous things.
A few weeks ago, I had a bee in my bonnet to to sew.
How can I get the machine out and sew and keep the boys entertained all at the same time?
My kids love technology and motors. I sometimes forget that at the heart of this beautiful little Singer is a motor with pistons and moving parts and a an honest to goodness motor. All I needed to do was get them interested in the machine (that took no time at all) , let them pick projects and promise to let them actually use it. Viola!

Asher picked a little pillow made from one of the few pieces of scrap fabric I have. He loved pushing the pedal and watching the needle pump up and down. He really loved the finished product!

Fin wasn't happy just sewing, he needed to take the lid off and see all the inner machination, that I had not even dreamed existed under there. He decided on a quiver for his bows and I decided that I didn't need a pattern. I used the left over fabric from my Amy Butler tunic. It took a little longer than I would have liked, lots of modifications, with Fin insisting it didn't fit right, (this is the same kid who can only wear one pair of socks because the seems on every pair bug him)) but eventually we finished and he is using his quiver daily and showing off his archery skills.
I waited until everyone was in bed and got out the same fabric. I knew I wanted a tunic, but since i can't seem to follow patterns I decided to make it up as I went. I used a favorite top as a guide. I can see how having a form would have been very helpful. It is a real pain to try on a top 25 times with pins sticking you in the sides and head.
I finished it that night and have been wearing it faithfully since! Not as cute as the Amy Butler tunic, but it fits a lot better and now I feel like I got a lot more use out of the fabric.
Things around Blackett Farm have been busy to say the least. My husband went out of town for the weekend, I worked some extra shifts, and the rain that I have been secretly praying for finally came.
Boy did it come. Here in Colorado, weather does not joke around. When it is dry, it is so dry the whole states practically self- combusts. When it rains, the skies open up and the streets turn to raging rivers. It is a great time to find out how well your raised beds drain. Judging by the standing pools of water a day later, not very well.
The rains also brought those magical weeds that grow at an accelerated rate that no other plant on earth could ever achieve.
They also come out of the ground a heck of a lot easier than when it's bone dry, so we have been weeding like mad and cutting back the wild borage. That is one hardy plant.
We picked our first tomato, a little messy but incredible. My rite of summer is a succulent Brandy wine tomato thickly sliced with mayonnaise on fresh Italian or French bread bread. Other hardy whites will do but whole wheat doesn't seem to do them justice. Since I am of Italian Heritage, I wonder if I naturally don't tolerate whole wheat? That's what I tell myself anyway.
I found a beautiful cookbook from sunset Edible Garden Cookbook! I can't wait for the eggplant.
Well, I have finally finished my Amy Butler tunic. It is way too small but for what it ended up costing I will squeeze myself into it if it suffocates me in the process. If I add in the cost of repairing my old Singer machine, 3 yards of this lovely fabric, an Amy Butler tunic pattern and 6 hours of lessons, (which was really money well spent) and these adorable vintage buttons, this little top is one of the most expensive things I own, next to my car and mountain bike. I just might ask to be buried in it.

The staff from A Verb for Keeping Warm have vowed to try and make 25% of their wardrobe and I see from many blogs it is really catching on. Ahh a new goal and reason to keep sewing! Or I could donate all my tops but this and three others and be done with it!

On the bee front....
It has been so hot the bees have been bearding like mad. I am concerned they might try and swarm again, which is supposedly certain death for them this late in the year. I will take pictures tomorrow.
I love small knitted toys that you can whip up in a few hours. This was intended for a friend's new baby but my sons loved it and asked to keep it. I know at 10 y/o and 8 y/o they won't be wanting stuffed toys much longer so how could I say no?

I tend to feel very passionate about certain things (like saving the planet) and maybe carry them a little farther than most people. This causes me to feel like I'm always on the fringe. In an attempt to fit in and not feel ostracized by "normal" people, I try to monitor myself to make sue I haven't crossed any lines.
For instance, several years ago, feeling very stressed about consumerism, I thought I would go a step further than the usual recycling and thrifting. I started compacting.
You may have heard of compacting, agreeing to not buy anything new for a year (with the exception of some essentials). Below are guidelines from The Compact forum.

The Compact.

We are a group of individuals committed to a 12-month flight from the consumer grid (calendar year 2012).

The Compact has several aims (more or less prioritized below):

To go beyond recycling
in trying to counteract the negative global environmental and
socioeconomic impacts of disposable consumer culture and to support
local businesses, farms, etc. -- a step that, we hope, inherits the
revolutionary impulse of the Mayflower Compact.

To reduce clutter and waste in our homes (as in trash Compact-er).

To simplify our lives (as in Calm-pact)

We've agreed to follow two principles (see exceptions etc. on our blog).

#1 Don't buy new products of any kind (from stores, web sites, etc.)
#2 Borrow, barter, or buy used.

Everyone I know seems on-board with a trip or two to a thrift shop for a shirt or a pair of jeans, but when I started buying our shoes second hand, I sort of figured I should keep that to myself.
In Tucson, because of such limited water resources, most people try to conserve water. When we went to bathing the kids only twice a week, it wasn't that extreme. When we stopped using soap in their bath so that we could bale the water out and use it to water plants, I thought we might have gone a little past socially-accepted.

When I killed a small portion of grass (don't get me started on the superfluousness of grass in the west!) to make a vegetable bed, no one thought I was crazy.
When I wiped out our entire yard, (front included) for a vegetable garden, my own family tried to have me committed.

For years I have dreamed about having my own fiber producing animal, be it angora rabbit, sheep or goat. Of course, even I realize that my yard has some limitations.

That is why when I saw this patten featured on Fancy Tiger's Raverly page (http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/minikitti) I thought I had died and gone to heaven.
Cute little kitty toy pattern you say?
And it matches the big kitty perfectly.
But how does it match the big kitty so perfectly?
Are you ready?
IT WAS KNIT IN THE CATS FUR! That's right, in the cats own fur! How completely wonderful is that?
I did some research and guess what? You can spin all sorts of pet fur into lovely skeins of yarn for knitting!

Now instead of cursing that hairy old dog while cleaning up clumps of this under the piano
Despite hellishly hot temperatures, and a front yard that looks like it belongs in the Sierra, the back yard seem to be doing well. Plants packed so tightly tend to shade the roots and keep the soil from drying out as quickly. Over crowding has it's problems too, but no matter how hard I try to keep plants generously spaced, i end up with this.
